The skinny on the casting of the main cast of the two parts of Fantastic Beasts. Here’s the segment on Eddie:

Nearly 15 years after the search for an unknown British actor to play Harry Potter, producer David Heyman had another famous wizard to cast – Newt Scamander. But this time there would be no great search, and the actor wouldn’t be totally unknown. ‘From the outset, Eddie Redmayne was our first and only choice,’ Heyman once wrote in the Telegraph. ‘He has all the elements required to be Newt: he&rsqu o;s smart, funny, utterly British, and immensely sympathetic – even as an outsider more comfortable with his beasts than with people.’

Beyond Newt, of course, Redmayne is best known for his Oscar-winning portrayal of the late physicist Stephen Hawking, whom he played in 2014 biopic The Theory of Everything. Two years later, he was reintroduced to the world as the star of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, where he led a new generation of talent (Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler and Ezra Miller) into a new era (well, the 1920s) for the Wizarding World.

As Newt, he portrayed a different kind of hero than Harry Potter. For one, he was an adult, which was reflected in the film’s mature tone. And two, he played Newt slightly more awkward, more shy and more reserved – a hero who, as Heyman said, was more ‘comfortable with his beasts than with people’. For the forthcoming second film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which moves the action from New York to Paris, Newt will begin to take on a pivotal role in a larger story – as he’s asked by Albus Dumbledore himself to forestall the rise of Gellert Grindelwald.

Our favorite goofball at Comic Con 2018. Thanks to  Sunpech Photograph y on facebook for sharing these!

Wow! A blogger who seeks out new material instead of just copying others’ (not even re-blogging!) How novel! These are great. They really capture how he drew energy from the event.

Making perfection exquisite

What do all these dramatic images have in common besides Eddie Redmayne? The gifted Petra Nina Sellge as his groomer/makeup artist. This London-based marvel respects his freckles, celebrates his cheekbones and always styles his hair to set off his face beautifully, whether it’s for a photo shoot or a special event. (Sometimes she grooms both Eddie and Hannah for an occasion.) We honor Eddie — and Petra — on this Man Candy/Crush Monday.

This was originally a Man Candy/Crush Monday post, but we’re reviving it before Throwback Thursday disappears in our part of the world.

It’s a look at a true artist — Petra Nina Sellge — and how she brings out the best in Eddie Redmayne whenever she’s in charge of his grooming and makeup. And here are a couple of her more recent “jobs” with Eddie, since this was originally posted, for an Omega watch shoot in Ibiza and an appearance in Venice for Omega, where she groomed both Eddie and Hannah. Wouldn’t we all love “work” like that?

Science? Adventure…

Having fun with filters and special effects on the intriguing shots from on-set this week. (My edit)

Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones are undoubtedly making movie magic again with The Aeronauts, filming now in the UK. He plays real-life pioneering meteorologist James Glaisher, and she is Amelia Wren, a filmmaking gender-bend of real life balloon pilot Henry Coxwell.

Here’s how Eddie responded earlier this year when I asked him about the film during his call with several fan bloggers:

I am so excited for it. I just found it the most beautiful script. It’s got this sort of epic scale to it, and yet it’s also a deeply intimate two-hander. And I’m so excited to work with Felicity again. I’m looking forward to where you can really mine every element. That being said, a lot of the film is in an air balloon — it’s two people in a b alloon — so I think there’s going to be effects and all that sort of stuff. We’ll see how we go about shooting it. But I’m incredibly excited about what the script is. It’s by a brilliant man called Jack Thorne and directed by Tom Harper, who I think has such vision. I really hope it ends up being a special piece. And I think I’ve spoken to you guys about it before, but the thing you react to in a script is how it makes you feel, and when I read this script, it just felt unlike anything I’d ever seen.

Déjà vu all over again?

Eddie Redmayne has a way of returning to important spots in his life in his films. There was a return to his alma mater, Eton College, for My Week With Marilyn, and a great deal of shooting for authenticity at another alma mater, Cambridge University, for The Theory of Everything.

Now, it seems, he may be back at this site — the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, England — filming The Aeronauts, a period adventure film in which he plays James Glaisher, an early and significant meteorologist who takes to the skies in a balloon to explore, with Felicity Jones co-starring as the balloon pilot, Amelia Wren. (Set photos from Twitter @_connorfrench, who commented, “Decent sized set down at @orncgreenwich this afternoon. The only thing they were allowed to say is that they’re filming a “period drama”. Lots of men in long black coats and top hats! ”)

Look familiar? How about now? The site was used in key scenes in this epic 2012 film in which Eddie appeared.

Yes, Les Miserables. We wonder if he could still hear the people sing…

More first looks at Eddie Redmayne (think Einar Wegener with looser hair and sideburns) and Felicity Jones (Victoria-like) as real life 19th century meteorology pioneer James Glaisher and invented balloon pilot Amelia Wren in the adventure film The Aeronauts, which recently began filming outside London.
